Neuroanatomy: Text and Atlas
- Book Review,
by John H. Martin

Book Description
The most comprehensive approach to neuroanatomy from both a functional and regional perspective! With over 400 illustrations, this thoroughly updated Third Edition examines how parts of the nervous system work together to regulate body systems and produce behavior. The illustration program features brain views produced by MRI and PET imaging technology, 2-color line illustrations, and myelin-stained sections as well as an 80-page atlas of key views of the surface anatomy of the central nervous system.

Book Info
Columbia Univ., New York City, NY. Text provides an overview of the structure and function of the central nervous system. Focuses on new findings in neuroanatomy and how pathological changes in brain structure alter brain function. For medical, dental, and graduate students. Previous edition: c1996. Softcover. DNLM: Central Nervous System--anatomy & histology.

From the Back Cover
TOP-RANKED BY STUDENTS—
CLEAR, VISUALLY COMPELLING, AND MEMORABLE Neuroanatomy: Text and Atlas approaches neuroanatomy from both functional and regional perspectives to provide an understanding of how the components of the central nervous system work together to sense the world around us, regulate body systems, and produce behavior. *Completely revised and updated to reflect advances in clinical neuroanatomy and neural science
*Builds knowledge of the regional and functional organization of the spinal cord and brain, one system at a time
*Provides thorough coverage of the sensory, motor, and integrative systems of the brain, together with cerebral vasculature
*Promotes understanding of the complex details of neuroanatomy needed for astute interpretation of radiological images
*Authoritative content enhanced by informative line illustrations, brain views produced by MRI and PET imaging technology and angiography, and myelin-stained histological sections
*Comprehensive atlas provides key views of the surface anatomy of the central nervous system and photographs of myelin-stained sections in three anatomical planes
*Includes features such as clinical topic boxes, chapter summaries, and a Glossary of key terms and structures

FROM THE CRITICS

Mukesh Misra

This is the second edition of a neuroanatomy text and atlas aimed at helping students understand the anatomical basis of clinical neurology. The material is presented in such a way that a relatively difficult subject is made easy to understand. This book also has a selection of drawings of key brain structures that are based on computer reconstructions of thinly sliced gross material. The purpose is to help students in medical and allied health sciences to learn the anatomy of the most complex structures in the brain in an easier way. It also is meant to assist readers to achieve a higher retention of neuroanatomical information through its use of three-dimensional illustrations of structures correlated with their location on two-dimensional sections. The book has been targeted mainly for students in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, and other allied health sciences. The book also is helpful for demonstrators in the neuroanatomy laboratory and for teachers in neuroanatomy who are preparing teaching sessions. The most important feature is the presentation of the material in a simple, concise, and easy-to-understand manner. It has a value as a self-study guide and resource for information on the structure and function of the human central nervous system. The book is an important contribution to the field of neuroanatomy and a simple learning tool for this subject. This book could serve as both text and atlas for an introductory laboratory courses in human neuroanatomy. It is intended to be used in conjunction with a parallel series of weekly laboratory exercises.
