How Many Fish? (My First I Can Read Book Series)
- Book Review,
by Caron Lee Cohen

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K?A very simple story in rhyme, set at the beach. Not only can beginning readers feel successful at mastering the short, repetitive sentences, but they can also excel at counting the human feet and fish under the water. Colorful illustrations enhance the text. Libraries that never seem to have enough of the easiest primers will want to add this appealing title.?Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 1^-2. From the My First I Can Read Book series comes a simple story that offers repetition, rhythm, and rhyme to speed beginners on their way into reading. Six fish are swimming in the shallows when six children's feet appear. One fish is trapped under a child's upside-down pail, until the child returns to retrieve the toy and unknowingly releases the fish. Schindler's pictures contribute color and visual clues to the action for those who need them. Adults determined to do so can make this into a counting book as well, but what the text and pictures really have to offer is a story simple enough for beginning readers to cut their teeth on and appealing enough for them to stick with. On that basis alone, it will be welcome in many libraries. Carolyn Phelan

From Kirkus Reviews
This My First I Can Read title is a rhythmic puzzle for the youngest of readers. A school of six fish swimming happily in the bay come up against the six feet belonging to three children, one of them armed with a red pail. An energetic and repetitive refrain will be comfortable for emerging readers; the visual clues supplied by Schindler's bold illustrations also build math skills. A gentle drama about an odd fish out--it is captured in the pail but escapes when the small pail-wielder's attention is claimed elsewhere--will appeal to children and boost their confidence in taking on more difficult reading material. How Many Fish? (My First I Can Read Book Series)

ANNOTATION

A school of fish and a group of children frolic in the bay.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

In the bay...

There are six little fish. Along come six little feet. What will happen when they meet?

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati

Colorful pictures of underwater life enhance the rhyming text of this "I Can Read Book" for beginning readers. Six little fish are on a journey in the bay. Three children are playing nearby. One little fish loses his way when he inadvertently swims under a child's red pail. As soon as the child scoops up his pail to join some friends, the fish happily rejoins his mates. The verse is repetitive, which lends itself to reinforcing the words that children learn to read in this book. This reinforcement will, in turn, build confidence in reading ability. Hopefully, it will also stimulate the desire to read and learn more words. Children will love the bright hues in these ocean scenes, but they may find the simple story a bit boring after reading it several times.
