ANNOTATION

After observing a boy's football game, a group of animals organizes its own teams and game.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

In 1957, Harper published its first I Can Read title, Little Bear, written by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Large type, simple vocabulary, chapter-like divisions, and decorative pictures made Little Bear perfect for emerging readersthey could read the story comfortably and not feel overwhelmed by the text. Following suit came such classics as Peggy Parish's Amelia Bedelia series, Lillian Hoban's books about Arthur the monkey, and Syd Hoff's popular Danny and the Dinosaur. Many books in this series are special in the depth of emotion evoked - Little Bear, the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, and Daniels Duck by Clyde Bulla, to name a few - and all are enjoyed by children of all ages. Grade 1 - Grade 3.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Wendy Keen

Rabbit, Dog, Cat and their friends see a puzzling object land in the forest. After Owl pronounces it a brown bear's egg, everyone is quite surprised when a boy comes to retrieve it, calling it a "football." The animals surreptitiously follow the boy to a large field where a group of children have split themselves into two teams-the Jets and the Giants. As the game begins, the animals are drawn into the excitement, and start playing their own football game along the sidelines and in the forest. This "I Can Read Book" provides a simple diagram of a football field, along with clear visual definitions of some football terms. The colorful, friendly illustrations are as amusing as the text. Kick, Pass, and Run is a delightful introduction to the sport of football. The attics of the animals, particularly when Frog eats the football will bring a few laughs.
