A Louisa May Alcott Christmas: Selected Holiday Stories and Poems FROM THE PUBLISHER
Oh, the beautiful old story!
Of the little child that lay
In a manger on that morning,
When the stars sang in the day ...
One of America's most treasured authors, Louisa May Alcott shines her brightest in this collection of holiday stories and poems. Each selection radiates with the true meaning of the season -- charity, hope, kinship, and love. From the Bassett family's holiday meal in An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving to Little Effie receiving a grand surprise in A Christmas Dream, and How It Came True, the girls and boys of this simpler time bring joy to our hearts today.
FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
The author who gave us Little Women has other wonderful stories to share with her adoring public. In this collection of holiday stories and poems, the reader will meet the Bassett family who celebrate Thanksgiving by sharing a meal prepared by the youngsters when Mother and Dad have to leave in a hurry. The meal is less than perfect, but the joy in being together around the family table is what is important. "Rosa's Tale" is the story of the life of a very grateful horse, told on the midnight hour of Christmas Eve, when legend tells us that animals are given the gift of voice. The story of Lu's little red purse reminds old and young alike that the real spirit of Christmas is in giving to others. Although the language is original to the period, and thus may be difficult for our contemporary readers, the stories are well worth the time. The publisher has attached a lovely Christmas wreath necklace to this title, for the young reader who is lucky enough to receive this book for Christmas. 2004, HarperFestival/HarperCollins, Ages 8 to 12.
