YA-This masterful title is the second book in Allende's adventure trilogy begun in La ciudad de las bestias (The City of the Beasts, Criticas, Sept./Oct. 2002). It tells the story of Alexander Cole, a 15-year-old from California; his grandmother Kate Cole, the dynamic and devoted reporter from the International Geographic and the magazine's team of photographers; and Nadia, a young Brazilian girl who is in touch with nature and can change into an eagle. Their adventure begins with a trip to the Forbidden Kingdom to write an article and photograph the golden dragon, which can predict the future. The book introduces delightful new characters: Tensing, a Buddhist monk and tutor to Dil Bahadur, prince and future king; Tex Armadillo, an American hit man and specialist in the art of stealing; Judit Kinski; and Pema, a young native girl. All bring their cultural values to the Forbidden Kingdom. The story is full of mystery and will take readers into a faraway place of natural wonders. This is a story of greed, mystery, and suspense that explores important themes of war and peace, East and West, new and old, good and evil. The plot is well crafted and believable a well thought out jigsaw puzzle that pieces together all the characters. Readers will be hooked from the very first page.
