From AudioFile
Milne's beloved classic (which can be read again and again and still delight the whole family) is an ideal candidate for an audio production, as Charles Kuralt has already proved with his own fine narration. In contrast to Kuralt's version, however, narrator Jim Broadbent's reading is distinctly British, though equally infused with warmth and humor. Broadbent's Pooh has a deep, growly voice, and his companions (nervous Piglet, gloomy Eeyore, suspicious Rabbit) are all lovingly differentiated by Broadbent, who regards them with the unreserved affection of Christopher Robin himself ("silly old Bear"). Purists will be grateful for this unabridged, non-Disney-tainted production. J.C.G. 2004 ALA Notable Recording © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Book Description

"Once upon a time, a very long time ago, Winnie-the-Pooh lived in a forest…" The world of Pooh is a world of enchantment. It is a world forever fixed in the minds and hearts of countless children -- a world where Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga and the others share unforgettable adventures with Christopher Robin.

Winnie-the-Pooh is filled with delight: Pooh goes hunting with Piglet, celebrates Eeyore's birthday, and accompanies Christopher Robin and the others on an "Expotition" to the North Pole. Through it all, Pooh remains the whimsical philosopher and staunch friend, captivating children as he has for generations.

The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature
A story collection for children by A.A. Milne, published in 1926. Milne wrote the episodic stories of Winnie-the-Pooh and its sequel, The House at Pooh Corner (1928), for his young son Christopher Robin, whose toy animals were the basis for the characters and whose name was used for the young boy who appears in the tales as the benign master of the animals. The main character, Winnie-the-Pooh (sometimes called simply Pooh or Edward Bear), is a good-natured, honey-loving bear who lives in the Forest surrounding the Hundred Acre Wood. His companions are Eeyore, a gloomy gray donkey; Tigger, a frisky tiger; Piglet, a timid pig; Owl, a pontificating bird; the meddlesome Rabbit; and Kanga, an energetic kangaroo whose inquisitive baby, Roo, lives in her pouch.

Winnie-the-Pooh

FROM OUR EDITORS

Here's where Pooh's adventures all began. Published in 1926, this is the original Winnie-the-Pooh with illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard. Beginning with "Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees," here are ten classic tales featuring the whole gang: Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Eeyore, Owl, Kanga, Little Roo, and Christopher Robin. Rmember when Pooh visits Rabbit and "gets into a tight place" as he attempts to enter Rabbit's house? Remember Eeyore's very eventful birthday party? Piglet's water-filled rescue? The beloved stories are all here, as A.A. Milne wrote them more than 70 years ago.

Grab a copy of Winnie-The-Pooh, open to the map of the Hundred-Acre Wood, turn on the tape recorder with this recording, and settle in to enjoy the adventures of Christopher Robin and his friends just as A.A. Milne might have shared them with his own family. Producer David Benedictus's dramatization of Milne's enduring stories is a listening pleasure. The interchange between the narrators and the overall tempo of the production invite the listener to relax and become engaged in the familiar episodes, including a mysteriously moving house, elevenses, and trapping the elusive Heffalump. Each cast member has taken on the persona of his or her character with relish and delight. In soothing British English, Pooh ponders solemnly, Piglet squeaks delightfully, Eeyore wonders soulfully, and Tigger irritates appealingly. Poems and ditties are enhanced by a light musical accompaniment. A rich experience, indeed! A.R. © AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine
