FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Here is a series that is a saccharine as "Strawberry Shortcake." The stars of this series of books with names like Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Misty, Cotton Candy should tip off the reader. They are multi-colored ponies with big curly tails, lots of hair (manes), wide eyes and long eyelashes and believe it or not tattoos. This story is one with a strong message. The ponies are gathered at the Castle. Everyone is excited about the upcoming play and anxious to know what their roles will be. Cotton Candy is the director, and she wants everything to be right. The other ponies make suggestions, but she ignores them. Morale drops and Cotton Candy then realizes her mistake. All the ponies need to take ownership and feel like they are part of the process—Cotton Candy realizes that their suggestions indeed make for a better product. 2003, Hasboro/HarperCollins, Ages 3 to 5.
