FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

If you don't think that using a reference book when doing a crossword puzzle is cheating, then this "crossword" dictionary is for you. If you have doubts, then use this book only if you are stuck or just need a couple of answers to help you complete the puzzle, as New York Times crossword editor Will Shortz suggests in his introduction. Compiled by two crossword puzzle pros, the work is arranged alphabetically, with entries including 500,000-plus synonyms, 3000-plus books, 5000-plus films, 20,000-plus famous people, and over 100,000 "possible answers" or clues listed according to the number of letters in the word. If the clue is part of an expression, the dictionary gives possible words to start, finish, or complete it. You will find Nobel prize winners by category and year, Mel's Diner waitresses, Hall of Famers in baseball and basketball, Kim Basinger's films, 100 ways to say "good," and lots of current TV and pop culture items. The only minor inconsistency this reviewer was able to detect is that under the many possibilities for Ben, Stiller is missing, but he is listed under Stiller, along with his films and parents. Bottom Line Although well constructed, this reference book begs the question of how many patrons actually do crossword puzzles in libraries or visit their libraries to look up words for this reason. If the number at your library is significant, then consider purchasing this excellent resource.-Kitty Chen Dean, Nassau Community Coll., Garden City, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
