Laura's Album: A Remembrance Scrapbook of Laura Ingalls Wilder
- Book Review,
by William Anderson

From Booklist
Gr. 3^-6. Noted Wilder historian Anderson has compiled a scrapbook of photos, early writings, letters, and drawings saved by Wilder and now preserved in various private and public collections throughout the U.S. The mementos are arranged by decade and explained in captions and a succinct account of the author's long and eventful life. Many of the photos were previously published in pamphlets available at the homesites, but the use of high-quality paper and modern printing techniques enhances their clarity, especially for the oldest images. The later chapters also contain material from the HarperCollins archives, including advertising posters, publicity photos, and reproductions of some of the original Helen Sewell illustrations. Appended with a detailed chronology and illustration credits, this is a worthy companion to the Little House series that should be welcomed wherever the stories are popular. Adult fans will be interested, too. Kay Weisman

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford

A beautiful book, perfect as a gift for the older child who has read the books of Laura Ingalls Wilder or for the adult who grew up watching "Little House on the Prairie" on television. The book is presented as an old-fashioned album and contains a gift card. Photographs, letters and drawings from many private and public collections document the long and fascinating life of a woman whose writings not only told the story of her own family, but which painted a detailed picture of an era in the history of our country as well. Laura Ingalls was born in 1867 and in 1885 married Almanzo Wilder. Although she began writing articles for publication around 1910, it was not until 1932, after her daughter Rose became a successful writer, that Laura's book, Little House in the Big Woods, was published. The family had suffered many hardships, yet they persevered with a courage that today seems remarkable and which struck a chord with readers during the Depression years. Laura's stories became popular and a series of Little House books was planned. The eighth and final book, published when she was 73, chronicled her years of teaching and her marriage to Almanzo.
